Candy Chang is the creator of the Before I Die project, which started when she stenciled the words “Before I die I want to _______.” on a chalkboard wall on an abandoned house in New Orleans. Overnight it became a place for people to pick up a piece of chalk, reflect on their lives and share their personal aspirations in public space. Similar to Candy, I’ve chosen to share my reflections and aspirations through this blog. In sharing my personal experiences and opinions, I hope to inspire.

I recently participated in a workshop with other professional women from various backgrounds. Using Candy’s project as inspiration, we were asked to think of at least one thing we want to do before we die and share with the group. The one thing could be anything like something we were currently working on from our bucket list or a goal we want to accomplish.

Of course, I couldn’t select just one thing I want to do more than anything else but I was able to prioritize three things. Through sharing, I learned so much about the other women in the room and have established a special connection with each of them. With this goal in mind, I share my top three desires with you.

Before I die…I want to sing with an R&B Band. I grew up singing nothing but gospel. I will never forget the words of my first lead in the children’s choir at church –“Who made the fish in the sea, who made you and me, who made the birds in the sky, who made you and I.” The song was entitled POWER. I didn’t know then that my voice was powerful but I certainly know now. Through trial and error, I’ve learned that my vocal power can translate to any genre of music I choose. I’ve only had a little practice through a nonprofit fundraiser but don’t be surprised to see and hear a new alto vocalist in your favorite local cover band real soon. My inner Whitney just can’t sit still any longer and my outer Chaka is ready to get this party started. Stay tuned.

Before I die…I want to turn my blog into a book. Writing provides more therapy for me than any couch or hug ever could. There is not only power in my voice but power in my pen. Through writing, I share the essence of my soul while igniting my spirit. Sometimes I rant. At other times, I scream. Sometimes I purge. At other times, I penetrate. Through every prose, I express emotion. I am already lost in my thoughts thinking about my next writing. “NY Times bestseller” will eventually top my credentials list.

Before I die…I want to marry. Yes, divorce rates are high and available options are few. Yet, I am a hopeless romantic who still believes in love. A Couple of Forevers aren’t too much to ask.
